Product Description

• Tribal Igorot 2 Wood Carvings of Woman's Head with Headband Pipe, small ~H:4x3" Vtg
Beautifully created and richly detailed Female Head sculptures from the Philippines, circa 1950s-'60s.

The carvings depict a woman with a traditional rolled head wrap and a more modern tobacco pipe tucked under. One carving has an added hair bun otherwise both are near identical. The wood used appears as either Teak or Oak that has graciously aged over the decades with minimal faults.

Tribes in the Mountain Province of The Cordillera ranges are called "Igorots" which mean "People of the mountains." The Cordilleras is a chain of mountains, located in Northern Luzon, Philippines. Igorots were headhunters up till mid-century and even the '70s, being the last known trophy head taken. Allied to the US they were fierce fighters during WII against the Japanese. Good reading historically and presently on the culture of these people, who definitely are to be admired.
