A sculptured Sea Lion that gives power to its form and beauty from its graceful lines that envelope it.
The wood is hardwood and just right in weight, appears reminiscent of that found along coastal beaches, possibly even old clipper ship wood. Should stand well over time and enrich any surroundings that its added to.
The artist knew what they were doing when working this wood.
It would have challenge, but they seem of a type that confidently could create and breathe life into their work. Definitely great in facial features and even the ears (few artist employ them) just adds emboldening to character a sea lion holds. Would think the artist had actually lived near the coastal areas.
It has a very nicely formed burl knot below the front neckline and appears that the wood carver had their work cut out in dealing with this area; since some addition may had been made.
Circa 1950s-60s or earlier and viewed as having been well cared of by its previous owner.
